Rare impression of the 1st state (of 3) before any letter.

Superb impression printed on laid paper, trimmed to the platemark. In very good condition.

Paolo Bellini wrote in his catalogue raisonné of Carlo Maratti’s prints, published in 1977: "The first state, which is very rare, is unknown in Bartsch's catalogue, but is mentioned in Heller's (J. HELLER, Zusätze zu Adam Bartsch's, Le Peintre-Graveur, Bamberg 1844, p. 72).” (translated by us).

Adam Bartsch emphasised the "sharp, witty line" of Maratti's etchings. Only fourteen prints are reliably attributed to him by Paolo Bellini.
